Leading through crisis
Before the war in Yemen, Malia and her family were happy. Life was normal. They were content.
“My husband used to work before the war and everything was fine,” Malia says. “I was comfortable inside Sana’a [Yemen’s capital city].
“My story began when the war came, and we had to flee to the village … my children slept without dinner and walked without shoes … I keep worrying, and I got anxious over my condition.”
When her son became unwell, Malia was forced to pawn her essential belongings and borrow money that she knew she would struggle to pay back. But she did what she had to do to keep her son alive.
While admirable, Malia’s story isn’t unique. CARE has been responding to emergencies for more than 75 years’ and in that time, we’ve seen countless women go to extreme lengths to protect the ones they love.
