Our top 5 favourite photographs of 2023

by CARE Australia - December 22, 2023
Bangladesh/Lebanon/Timor-Leste/West Bank Gaza/Zambia

Each of these images has beautifully captured poignant moments in everyday life from diverse corners around the world. Thank you to our dedicated photographers, who work tirelessly to showcase how supporting women plays a crucial role in our ongoing endeavours to overcome poverty.

Capturing Complexity in Simplicity

By Grayscale Media, Gaza

We take a glimpse into a child’s world amidst Gaza realities—a compelling photograph that, in its simplicity, prompts the viewer to contemplate what the child might be experiencing.

A Palestinian child from the Gaza Strip is observed within his family’s tent in a camp in Khan Younis. After evacuation alerts, a large number of internally displaced people sought refuge in the southern Gaza Strip.

Febby’s Resilience: finding pathways to transform lives

By Peter Caton, Zambia

“We women are the ones that are in the forefront to see that the project is successful because it is going to help us in our lives.”

Febby is a 50-year-old mother of five, living in a small village in the Southern Province of Zambia, participating in CARE’s climate project which aims to make the community more resilient to the impact of the climate crisis. This incredible portrait challenges gender stereotypes. In this image Febby exemplifies determination, empowerment, embodying a strong, active, and powerful character.

Capturing Joy and Positivity in Adversity

By Victoria Chan-Frazier, Lebanon

“When I work, I feel like I own the world” — Youmin Nasser Al Khoder lives in a small village called Berdeh from the northern Governorate of Akkar in Lebanon.

In the realm of humanitarian photography, where scenes of hardship often prevail, this portrait of Youmin Nasser Al Khoder stands out as a symbol of hope, happiness, and laughter—a refreshing breath of positivity.

Empowered Elegance: Where Strength Meets Self-Determination

By Sarah Wiles, Timor-Leste

We adore this portrait of Petronella da Cruz, capturing her strength and assertiveness. Her vibrant colleagues in the background, intentionally blurred, compliment Petronella’s distinctive personality and sense of self determination.

Petronella is leader of the Suco Disaster Management Committee in Viqueque, and Group Leader for her community’s women-only Village Savings and Loans Association, supported by CARE Australia. Her primary mission is to advocate for the wellbeing and support of women with disabilities residing in her rural community.

Monalisha: Redefining Norms with Bold Assertiveness and Fun

By Mohammad Hasan Zobayer, Bangladesh

This captivating image of Monalisha encapsulates the breaking of gender stereotypes. It portrays her defiance, determination, and assertiveness while exuding a sense of fun and boldness. Monalisha participates in CARE’s Tipping Point program—a program that advocates for girls to participate in outdoor sports in Bangladesh.

To all of you who have generously supported us through this tough year, thank you for making stories like these possible.
