CARE in Myanmar is working alongside local partners delivering aid to impacted communities following the catastrophic earthquake. More than 3,800 casualties have been reported and 370 people remain missing. Over 5,100 people are injured and and 17 million people are affected. More than 40,000 homes are damaged or destroyed.
The Situation in Myanmar
On March 28, 2025, Myanmar experienced a 7.7 magnitude earthquake, with its epicenter in Sagaing Region, near the center of Myanmar. A state of emergency has been declared in Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Eastern Shan, Naypyidaw, and Bago regions.
6.3 million urgently need aid, including many already vulnerable due to conflict and poverty. Myanmar is already facing a severe humanitarian crisis and the earthquake has exacerbated these challenges, putting additional strain on the country’s resources and response capabilities.
CARE has reached 10,652 people with humanitarian assistance – so far. This includes; food and water access, medical attention for the injured and medical supplies, emergency shelter, and distribution of hygiene kits.
“CARE Myanmar is on the ground and has begun its emergency response alongside our dedicated partners who have been among the first responders. We have already distributed emergency health kits to several camps. Our priority is to help people meet their urgent needs; the situation demands far more – shelters, medicine and clean water are all critically needed. This catastrophe has brought already vulnerable communities to their knees. People traumatised by the earthquake are sleeping on the streets, with no clean water or food to eat and nowhere to escape from the heat. They simply don’t know where to turn or where to find safety. Our emergency relief teams are witnessing complete devastation everywhere we go,” says Arif Noor, CARE Myanmar Country Director.
