When you donate to CARE Australia, you’re not only helping to create lasting change for women and girls facing poverty and inequality, but you may also be eligible to claim your gift as a tax deduction. Understanding how to make the most of your donation at tax time means you can stretch your impact even further.

If you’ve been considering giving, now is the perfect time to act. Every contribution helps CARE deliver essential programs where they’re needed most – and your donation of $2 or more is tax-deductible in Australia.

Donate now to support vulnerable communities and maximise your tax benefits.

Let’s walk through exactly how to claim your CARE tax-deductible donations so you can give with confidence.

Understanding CARE Tax Deductible Donations

A little background information can be useful before we explain the details of eligibility and claiming. In Australia, not all donations to charity are created equal. But CARE Australia passes the tests that qualify your gift as deductible.

This means your generosity can go further, giving you the chance to provide more to the important programs and people who need it most – and a benefit at tax time too.

What Does Tax Deductible Mean?

If a donation is tax-deductible, you can subtract the amount you donate when you lodge your tax return. For instance, if you earn $60,000 a year and you donate $200, you may only be taxed as though you earned $59,800. The donation will reduce your taxable income, which results in a higher return on your tax.

Tax-deductible donations mean double the value for CARE Australia supporters. Not only do you make your financial contribution go further by lessening your tax burden, you’re also doubling the impact of your donation as every dollar we receive is put towards our life-changing work, empowering women and girls to end poverty, inequality and injustice.

Why CARE Donations Qualify for a Tax Deduction

Not all organisations in Australia can accept tax-deductible gifts. For an organisation to be eligible to receive tax-deductible donations it must be registered with the Australian Tax Office as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR). CARE Australia is a DGR, which means that all gifts of $2 or more are an official tax deduction.

This applies to both one-off or regular gifts made directly to CARE, or through CAREgifts, our alternative giving program that lets you choose an impactful gift (such as school kits, clean water or emergency supplies) for women and girls in need.

Who Can Claim a Charitable Tax Deduction?

To claim a charitable tax deduction in Australia, you need to have made a donation of $2 or more to an organisation with DGR status and be lodging an individual or business tax return. CARE Australia meets these requirements, making it one of the best charities for tax donation benefits.

Gifts can be made in a number of ways (from direct donations to CAREgifts), but as long as it’s given in your (or your business’s) name you’re entitled to a deduction.

Steps to Claim Your CARE Tax Deductible Donation

Claiming your donation is straightforward, but it’s important to get the details right so your tax return reflects your generosity. The two essential steps are simple: first, make sure you keep your donation receipt, which is the official record you’ll need for your claim; second, accurately include the deduction in your tax return when lodging with the ATO or through your tax agent.

Following these steps ensures your support for women and girls through CARE Australia is both impactful and recognised at tax time.

Keep Your Donation Receipt

Receipts are your donation record and your pathway to a tax deduction. If you donate online, in person or via a CAREgift you should keep the receipt issued by CARE Australia. The receipt will state the amount and date of your gift and confirm that your gift is tax-deductible.

For example, if your gift has gone to CARE’s global emergency fund you will be supporting fast relief to women and girls facing crisis situations in many countries. It is important to keep your receipts so that every donation can be claimed on your tax return.

Include the Deduction in Your Tax Return

Keeping the donation receipt is great, but next you must claim the deduction on your tax return to make sure the generosity of strangers to CARE Australia is made official with the ATO and can be used to lower your taxable income.

There are two ways to do this:

  • Using myTax (ATO Online Service)

If you are lodging your tax return online through myTax, you will be prompted to fill out a section titled “Gifts and Donations”. Simply fill in the total dollar amount of all eligible donations and have your receipts handy should ATO require substantiation.

  • Claiming Through a Tax Agent or Accountant

If you use a registered tax agent or accountant, you can give them all your receipts so that they can make sure your donations to CARE Australia are being properly claimed and to get the most tax benefit from your donations.

How Much Can You Claim?

The value of your claim will vary according to the amount and type of gift and the method used to make the donation. There is no maximum personal contribution, which means one-off emergency donations or regular monthly contributions are tax-deductible. When claiming tax deductions, make sure to keep a record of each gift you make.

Gifts made through workplace giving programs are usually taken from your pre-tax salary, making it simple to claim tax deductions. Businesses are also able to claim a deduction for donations made as part of a company’s corporate social responsibility strategy. By keeping a clear record of your giving, you can ensure every gift you make is eligible for the full tax advantage.

Common Questions About CARE Tax Deductible Donations

Can I Claim if I Donated Goods or Time?

Donations of goods or your time are both valuable and essential to the work of charities like CARE Australia. However, only financial gifts or donations of property that have been given to a registered Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) in Australia can be claimed as a tax deduction. This is why CARE Australia does not offer a tax deduction for volunteering your time.

What Happens If I Lost My Receipt?

Receipts for your donations are required to be kept if you wish to claim the amount as a deduction. If you have misplaced a receipt, you are able to request a replacement from CARE Australia. For any one-off or ongoing donations, it is a good idea to keep all of your receipts for tax time.

Do I Need to Itemise Every Donation?

Yes, if you are claiming the full amount donated throughout the year, each donation will need to be recorded. This can include regular donations made through workplace giving programs or CAREgifts. Having all receipts for the year available will allow you to accurately include these donations on your tax return.

Make the Most of Your CARE Donations

Donating to CARE Australia is a powerful way to provide ongoing support for women and girls in need while also making your money work for you as part of your tax planning. The key is to keep good records and claim the tax deduction when you do your tax return.

Visit ato.gov.au or talk to a tax agent or accountant if you need advice on how to correctly claim a tax deduction for your donation. Every dollar you donate supports life-changing work with women and girls in Australia and around the world, including education and healthcare, emergency relief, and long-term recovery programs. You can also leave a gift in your will to make a lasting impact for future generations.
