Relief efforts in Lebanon
More than 1.2 million people have been displaced in Lebanon since the start of the escalation in February 2026, and shelters are stretched nearly to capacity. Constant airstrikes are forcing families to flee.
Countless communities are stricken by trauma and the fear of what may come next. Across the region, people who were already struggling to survive now face repeated displacement, loss and other ripple effects of the violence, with women and girls at particular risk. CARE is supporting Lebanese organisations to provide essential supplies to people who have been displaced.
Before the conflict was renewed, refugees, most of them fleeing the conflict in Syria, accounted for almost a quarter of the population in Lebanon. Most refugee families live in unfurnished houses, work sites or tents.
CARE works with local authorities to improve water supply and sanitation infrastructure for refugees and host communities, meeting their most basic and pressing needs, including sustainable livelihood opportunities and economic self-reliance, understanding how emergencies may create or reinforce opportunities for sexual exploitation and abuse of women and girls, and protecting girls’ pathways to education.
Previous response efforts include the aftermath of August 2020, when two explosions in Beirut left hundreds of thousands of people homeless. Years later, the city and its people are still trying to recover.
CARE’s response to the conflict in Lebanon
Since March 2026, our CARE colleagues and partners have been mobilising responses while working under extremely challenging conditions. Together with local organisations, CARE is providing essential supplies such as safe drinking water, meals and food parcels, dignity kits and hygiene kits.
CARE and local partners are also supporting displaced people with shelter, emergency cash assistance, medical assistance and mental health support. Special attention is being given to protecting women and girls who face increased risks of gender-based violence during emergencies.
Since the conflict escalation started in Lebanon, CARE has reached more than 150,000 affected people and supported over 36,000 households.
