Your CARE in action

by CARE Australia - July 7, 2025

As a CARE Australia supporter, you’re doing something incredible. You’re helping women and girls create lasting change — for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Because of your generosity, women and girls facing some of the world’s toughest challenges have had the chance to take control of their futures — gaining access to education, earning a living, and leading change in their communities around the world.

To show you the impact of your generosity, we’ve gathered real-life stories from four remarkable women who are turning hope into action — with your support.

“Now I believe it’s possible!” — Rudo, Zimbabwe

When 14-year-old Rudo lost her mother, her whole world changed. She had to leave the city and move to a remote village in rural Zimbabwe, forcing her to drop out of school and put her dreams of becoming a doctor on hold.

But thanks to the START4Girls project, supported by CARE Australia and donors like you, Rudo’s story took a powerful turn.

Through mentorship and community support, she returned to school. With renewed confidence and a dream rekindled, Rudo now believes in her future:

“I want to become a doctor. Now I believe it’s possible!”

Since 2020, the START4Girls program has helped thousands of girls like Rudo stay in school, gain leadership skills, and envision careers that once felt impossible. And it’s all thanks to you.

“Before, we were ignored. Now we are seen.” — Fenta, Ethiopia

With just two chickens and a loan from a local savings group, Fenta — a mother of three — began to transform her life and shape her future.

Over time, two chickens became a goat, then nine goats, then a cow who has recently had a calf. Today, the milk feeds her children and brings in extra income at the market. Fenta has even bigger dreams for the future:

“When I have four cows, I want to move closer to town and open a restaurant.”

CARE-supported savings groups are creating a financial lifeline in drought-hit regions like Ethiopia, where food prices have skyrocketed. But this is about more than income — it’s about economic justice, independence, and hope.

Because of you, women like Fenta are building the future they deserve.

“We’re stronger together.” — Marceline, Chad

For years, Marceline farmed peanuts with little certainty. Without tools or secure land, every season was uncertain.

But when she and her husband joined a CARE-supported farming group, everything changed. Through it, they received seeds, tools, and training in modern farming techniques. Within two years, the group had saved enough to buy their own land — dramatically reducing costs and increasing profits.

“Now we grow peanuts and trees and sell them. We grow trees and sell them. Now, we make enough money to buy machines to grind the nuts and grow our business further.”

With a more stable income, Marceline’s family can afford school fees, medical care, and nutritious food.

And the impact goes beyond income. “Now, my husband and I work together at home and in the field. We’re partners.”

Today, more than 50,000 women across Chad are gaining stability and financial independence through this farming initiative. You made this possible.

“Instead of having to find food, they can dream.” — Muna, Somaliland

In Somaliland, years of drought have devastated harvests, dried up water sources, and pushed families deeper into poverty. Many parents face impossible choices — like pulling their children, especially girls, out of school to help find food or earn income.

But thanks to your support, CARE’s school meals program is changing that. Every day, around 5,000 children receive a nutritious meal at school — often their only one.

For Muna, a mother of two and community volunteer, the impact is personal:

“Now they eat at school, and I can see them becoming stronger and more hopeful.”

Since implementing the program, school attendance is up, malnutrition is down, and communities are growing stronger.

On top of this, meals have been sourced from local farmers trained in climate-resilient agriculture through the project, creating a powerful cycle of support — from field to classroom.

This initiative is not just feeding children. It’s fuelling dreams, strengthening communities, and building futures — all thanks to you.
