CARE to be Equal

A three-year initiative to improve women and girls’ livelihoods, give them a voice and empower them to lead their communities. It starts with equal because we cannot eradicate poverty while inequality persists.

Fighting for women and girls’ equality in Asia-Pacific

CARE to be Equal is your opportunity to help create a more equal world today. Your partnership in supporting this vital work paves the way for others to follow in your footsteps. Every donation you make to this project will be combined with funding from the Australian Government to reach more people. We have committed to contribute $1 for every $5 we receive from the Australian government. Your donation will allow us to extend our programs.

Lisy’s Story

Lisy is a small business owner and a mum. Passionate about the flowers that grow in abundance in Vanuatu’s volcanic soil, Lisy made a living selling these flowers at the market. When flooding from a tropical storm damaged her flower garden, Lisy lost her sole source of income generation.

Following a CARE facilitated project on financial management, Lisy set herself the goal of opening a store to support her family. Thanks to the support provided by initiatives like CARE to be Equal, Lisy was able to realise her goal.

Now, Lisy and her family have greater income security, which is so important in a nation where natural disasters are only becoming more frequent.

All around her, Lisy is seeing women becoming more confident. They’re speaking up publicly and becoming more involved in household decision-making. Lisy believes this is as it should be. When women lead and earn an income and when couples share their responsibilities, the whole community grows.

Lisy is just one example of what CARE calls ‘the multiplier effect’ — the simple fact that when you provide one woman with the tools to lift herself from poverty, she’ll share those skills and resources with others and lift them with her.
