Children will not go to school hungry.
In Ethiopia, climate change is pushing families to the brink. The country has been experiencing the worst drought in more than 40 years. Crops are failing, livestock are dying, and women and girls are walking long distances each day just to collect water. For farming families, every season brings uncertainty and hunger.
For Amsal, a mother of seven, the drought once meant dry fields and constant fear of losing everything. Without reliable water, growing enough food for her family was becoming impossible.
Thanks to compassionate CARE supporters like you, Amsal’s life has changed. CARE introduced a solar-powered irrigation system, bringing sustainable water access to local farmers and helping communities build resilience against climate change.
“I produce twice as many crops as I did before,” Amsal says. “It totally changed my livelihood. I eat three times a day instead of only twice and I can provide for my children’s education.”

Clean Water, Education, and Hope for the Future
Every morning, Faduz used to wake with the same frightening thought: How will I find water for my children today?
Faduz, 27, lives in a displacement camp in Somaliland with her five children, including seven-month-old Abdisalam. After violence erupted near her village, she was forced to flee with her family, leaving everything behind.
“They came in the morning and burnt our whole village” Faduz recalls. As gunfire and explosions surrounded them, she gathered her children and ran. “I only took my children.”
For 24 hours, they walked through the heat in search of safety. But even after reaching the camp, life remained incredibly difficult. Clean water was scarce, and every day brought new worries about how she would keep her children healthy and safe.
Thanks to compassionate supporters like you, CARE has been able to restore access to clean water and provide emergency assistance for families displaced by conflict. Today, Faduz can collect safe water closer to home, her children are attending school, and healthcare is available when they need it.
“When I see my children drinking water and smiling again, I feel hope” says Faduz.

Children are attending school healthier and building brighter futures
In rural Timor-Leste, mothers like Adelina are helping create healthier futures for their children — thanks to compassionate supporters like you.
Adelina, a mother of four from Manatuto municipality, has seen firsthand how malnutrition affects children in her community.
“In many families, parents must choose between feeding their children or selling vegetables at the market to survive”
Through CARE’s Education and Nutrition Program, schools and families are working together to improve children’s nutrition, health and learning outcomes.
With support from compassionate people like you, children are receiving healthier meals at school, parents are learning better nutrition practices, and communities are gaining the knowledge and resources to grow nutritious food locally.
“It is a great collective effort to ensure children receive the right nutrients while at school,” Adelina says. “It is helping us create real change in the lives of our children and families.”
After Escaping Conflict, Maria Found Safety and Hope
At just 20 years old, Maria has already shown extraordinary strength. After fleeing violence in Sudan with her nine-month-old daughter Imtias, she arrived in Chad exhausted, hungry and desperate for safety.
“I am incredibly thirsty. Two days ago, was the last time I had water to drink” Maria told us.
Thanks to compassionate CARE supporters like you, Maria and her baby were met with immediate care and essentail support when they reached safety. At CARE-funded health centres, families receive emergency medical treatment, nutrition support, clean water and essential hygiene supplies. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers also receive specialised care to help keep themselves and their babies healthy.
Today, Maria no longer faces uncertainty alone. She has access to support, safety and hope for the future. Her daughter is receiving the care she needs, and Maria can begin rebuilding her life with renewed strength and optimism.

Mothers plan for the future with renewed optimism
Each morning in San Juan Ostuncalco, Guatemala, a group of women gather at their poultry barns before the sun rise.
For many of these women, life was once filled with uncertainty. Opportunities to earn an income were limited, and even small financial setbacks could place enormous strain on their households. But through CARE’s Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), women are finding strength not only in savings, but in each other.
By contributing small amounts of money into their savings groups, women can access loans to grow businesses, invest in poultry farming and provide more stable incomes for their families. Together, they share knowledge, encouragement and hope.
Thanks to compassionate supporters like you, women are gaining financial skills, confidence and greater independence. Mothers are able to buy food, support their children’s education and plan for the future with renewed optimism.

Women Deliver 2026: Elevating Women’s Voices
In April, Melbourne hosted the world’s largest gender equality conference, Women Deliver, for the first time in the Oceania-Pacific region. More than 6,000 delegates from 189 countries came together to share ideas, challenge inequalities and explore solutions for a more equal future for women and girls.
CARE was proud to participate with a delegation of more than 30 staff and partners from across Asia-Pacific and beyond. Together, they shared experiences and insights on issues including climate justice, women’s rights, youth leadership and community resilience, ensuring the voices of women closest to these challenges were heard on a global stage.
One powerful theme throughout the conference was the role women play in responding to the climate crisis. While women are often disproportionately affected by disasters, they are also leading change in their communities and helping build safer, more resilient futures.
Ahead of the conference, CARE supporters joined international guests and colleagues for a special brunch at Studley Park Boathouse. Filled with conversation, laughter and diverse perspectives, the gathering celebrated the strength of our global community.
Environmentalist and CARE supporter Natalie Kyriacou OAM says:
‘When climate disasters hit, whether it’s a tsunami or drought, women die in far greater numbers than men. Many women stay behind to care for children and the elderly. Male violence against women also increases in times of disaster. And too often, safety systems aren’t designed with women in mind.”
However, whilst women are disproportionately affected by the climate crisis, they are also the strongest agents of change. A recent survey by CARE showed that 4 in 5 women in crisis-affected areas are working to make their communities safer.
