Relief efforts in Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso faces ongoing political instability due to security issues, a lack of strong leadership, weak governance, and the presence of armed groups. The country has also experienced years of extreme poverty and high levels of economic inequality and agricultural loss. Burkina Faso remains at-risk for natural disasters related to changes in rainfall patterns and faces an acute food and nutrition crisis. This is a direct result of a prolonged drought, which affected the Sahel region in 2017-18.
CARE has been working in Burkina Faso through implementing partners since 2017. Recent programs include a project focusing on women’s participation in preventing conflict and building peace in Niger and Burkina Faso, funded by the European Union and the Austrian Development Agency.
