Your CARE in action

by CARE Australia - January 17, 2025

As a charity, we couldn’t do what we do, without people like you.

By donating so generously to CARE Australia, you are empowering women and girls to defeat poverty and create brighter futures for themselves. And let’s not forget, we know that when one woman breaks free from poverty, she brings another four people with her – that’s a powerful multiplier.

To give you an idea of how you’re bringing about powerful, positive change in the world, we’ve pulled together a collection of inspiring real-life stories just for you. We hope you enjoy them.

“We have many hazards here: floods, cyclones, and earthquakes. We are located close to the water, so it is risky. What if there is a tsunami? Tsunamis happen, so we must be prepared for them. Having a strong disaster management program and drills will help us improve our preparation and will support the children to feel confident.”

Mary is the Head Teacher at a school in Solomon Islands and took part in the Disaster Ready training run by CARE’s partner Live & Learn. The program supports entire communities working through schools to deliver emergency preparedness guidance and training. This includes developing disaster management plans for schools, and equipping teachers and administrators with the skills to lead during emergencies and deliver first aid when necessary.

Your support is ensuring women are empowered to be active participants in their communities, building stronger, more equal and resilient communities for the future.

In Samoa, Talalelei participates in a seedling distribution project run by CARE and our partner organisation, Women in Business Development Inc. The project provides women with resilient seedlings and training, helping improve their ability to grow their own fruit and vegetables in tough climates and improving their families’ nutrition.

“We were given free vegetable seeds including lettuce, cabbages, eggplant and beans…It helped us save money by not having to buy vegetables…And I was able to feed the children with nutritious food…I am very thankful for the kind support.”

Your support is providing agricultural skills training for women, empowering them to grow sustainable and nutritious food.

For Elsie, a small business owner in rural Vanuatu, life used to feel uncertain. Running her business was a constant challenge — some months were good; others left her worried about how to make ends meet.

But everything began to change when she joined her local Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA). The program goes beyond traditional savings models, offering business and financial training to women like Elsie, along with coaching to unlock their potential.

“The training really helped me; I learnt a lot and I’ve implemented some things already. When I started my business last year, I only sold small products. But now, through the training, I have a plan to diversify and grow the business.”

With your help CARE Australia is empowering women to build sustainable, resilient and profitable livelihoods that benefit the whole community.
