In December 2020, Tropical Cyclone Yasa struck Fiji, leaving a trail of destruction in its path. It was the second Category 5 cyclone to strike the island nation that year, after Tropical Cyclone Harold displaced 10,000 people and caused nearly $100 million worth of damage.
The disaster destroyed more than 8,000 homes, displaced tens of thousands, and left several islands without power or running water. Landslides and flash flooding followed, which ruined crops and contaminated water supplies, causing an estimated loss of nearly $250 million to infrastructure, livelihoods, and agriculture.
CARE’s local partner, Live & Learn, immediately launched an emergency response to provide urgent lifesaving aid to those most in need. And over the years that followed, they trained farmers in climate-resilient agricultural techniques to ensure a stable food supply; worked with communities to improve sanitation and hygiene practices so communicable diseases don’t spread so quickly in the aftermath of disaster; and engaged governments to ensure resources are more accessible when the next disaster strikes.
