About the Boxing Day tsunami
The Boxing Day tsunami was the largest and most devastating disaster ever that CARE Australia has responded to. We were amazed by the outpouring of compassion and generosity of the Australian public, whose contribution to CARE’s global response helped rebuild the lives of more than 1.3 million people in many of the worst affected communities in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

CARE and Disaster Response
With over 75 years of experience and a long-term presence in many of the world’s most vulnerable countries, CARE takes a holistic approach to disaster response. We work with communities to prepare for and lessen the impact of disasters, partner with local groups to provide immediate assistance when an emergency hits, and support survivors in their recovery from the aftermath.

Renee’s* story
I arrived in Aceh in mid-January 2005, and the scale of devastation was unimaginable. Entire buildings were flattened, fields replaced what used to be homes, and bodies were everywhere. It felt like even the hope for life was gone.
The destruction in Aceh was unprecedented, and the response was overwhelming. Communication was limited to satellite phones, and the influx of aid created logistical challenges. Visiting evacuation tents was heartbreaking. Families lost loved ones, their belongings, and their will to live. As humanitarian workers, we had never faced anything like this before—it was mentally and emotionally draining.
Aid distribution varied depending on the immediate needs we were tasked to address. For example, we prioritized water and food supplies based on the situation’s demands. Water, in particular, was urgently needed everywhere, so we focused much of our efforts on ensuring its availability.
